The consumer and family carer workshop held prior to this year’s annual public forum raised important questions about the NDIS rollout. Questions fell into a number of broad themes: uncertainty around what to expect from the NDIS, the planning process, funding for housing, funding for medical needs and access to advocacy. Starting with advocacy, we will address each of these themes in future newsletters, mindful that the Scheme is under development and the answers to these questions are still evolving.
We have found that young people with disability and complex care needs often need the support of an advocate to ensure they get an NDIS plan that is tailored to meet their immediate needs, but flexible enough to support them to take advantage of opportunities. Good pre-planning with the support of an advocate may reduce the need to review or appeal a plan at a later date.
For further information, the Advokit website has been developed as an advocacy tool to help people navigate the NDIS.
The DANA website provides links to advocacy services across Australia.
