This research project was inspired by two 2011 British research projects that explored the prevalence, characteristics and life experience of sibling kinship carers and their support needs.
Our project widened the focus to shine a light on young kinship carers (30 years or under) with a range of relationships to the children in their care. Information from the Australian census was examined and interviews were conducted with young kinship carers and young people. Work was undertaken to explore the feasibility of establishing a pilot support service for young kinship carers. Publicity and promotional activities were conducted.
