Over the last five years, there has been an intense debate about religious freedom in Australia. It was one of the major issues considered by the Australian Law Reform Commission’s 2016 inquiry into freedoms. The issue burst into public consciousness particularly with the debate, culminating in a postal survey in 2017, about whether to allow same-sex marriage. Concerns about religious freedom were a key part of that debate.
