It was one of the major issues considered by the Australian Law Reform Commission’s 2016 inquiry into freedoms. The issue burst into public consciousness particularly with the debate, culminating in a postal survey in 2017, about whether to allow same-sex marriage. Concerns about religious freedom were a key part of that debate.
